They advised Bloom to spend some time near

the sea the way in the village one spends time near the fireplace.

The sea isn’t like fire, for which a small

portion gives one an idea of the whole: the sea does not

exist in boxes, its essence is not retained

when moved to an aquarium. The sea

is not merely salt water; its grandeur

gives it its name. The sea as a whole isn’t as easily captured

in photographs as a fireplace.

That which can be photographed is miniscule and feeble:

see also this rule for men, animals, and the

multiple terrestrial elements: secrets strengthen

the hearts of things. Thus Bloom

submerged himself in thought,

into that sea that cannot be captured in a photograph.
